Can a capsized boat be saved?
If a capsized vessel has enough flotation to prevent sinking, it may recover on its own in changing conditions or through mechanical work if it is not stable inverted. Vessels of this design are called self-righting.
What should you do if your boat capsized?
After the boat capsizes, you should immediately do a head count to make sure everyone is with the boat. The general rule is to ensure that all crew members are wearing PFDs and that they stay with the boat; there may be possibilities of righting it, and rescuers will be able to find you more easily.
How do you survive a capsized boat?
- Stay Afloat. Your priority is survival.
- Ask for Help. It won’t take long before exhaustion overwhelms you.
- Stay Near the Boat. Do not swim away from the boat once it capsizes, unless it is getting near a hazard.
- Turn the Boat.
