Are clams fish or meat?

Although their shells may differ, all shellfish are invertebrates. As non-mammalian animals that spend their entire lives in water they are “fish” in an informal sense; however, the term ”finfish” is sometimes used to distinguish fish, animals defined by having vertebrae, from shellfish in modern terminology.
Shellfish fall into two different groups: crustaceans, like shrimp, crab, or lobster. mollusks, like clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, octopus, or squid.
Is a shellfish a fish?
All fish can be classified into two very broad categories: fish and shellfish. In the most basic terms, fish have fins, backbones, and gills, while shellfish have shells of one form or another.
Are clams living or non living?

You’ll want to bring the little fellers home as quickly as possible, take them out of the bag, cover them with a damp towel and store them in the cold back part of the refrigerator.

Are clams alive when frozen?
Frozen clams will last up to 3 months at 0 degrees F. Thaw frozen clams in the refrigerator before using, and never refreeze them. While About.com is not always the best, in this case their information passes the gut test. Frozen clams certainly would be killed, and so wouldn’t open upon steaming.
Are clams dead if they float?
Clams and mussels shells should be slightly open, and should shut quickly when you tap on them. If they’re closed, don’t shut, or float in water, they’re dead.
Will clams open if they are dead?
Clams are exceedingly perishable; there is no length of time after they are dead that you should eat them. They should always be killed as part of the cooking process. They may open (they are naturally filter feeders, and open to try and feed and respire), but if tapped should close indicating they are still alive.
Do clams give live birth?
To reproduce, clams release eggs and sperm into the water seasonally, generally in mid-summer when water is warm and planktonic food is abundant. After fertilization of an egg, cellular division produces larvae and eventually tiny clams that settle to the bottom.
Their nervous system is decentralized relative to ours, lacking any sort of brain, and to the untrained eye, it can appear that their only discernible reaction to the outside world is opening or closing.
Can a clam bite you?
Today the giant clam is considered neither aggressive nor particularly dangerous. While it is certainly capable of gripping a person, the shell’s closing action is defensive, not aggressive, and the shell valves close too slowly to pose a serious threat.
Do clams have eyes?
In bivalves, eye type varies between taxa, including photoreceptive cells in the mantle, pit eyes, mirror eyes, and compound eyes. Some bivalves possess multiple types of eyes along the mantle, such as ark clams (family Arcidae), which have both pit eyes and compound eyes (Nilsson, 1994; Patten, 1887; Waller, 1980).
Do clams feel pain when opened?
Scientists do not yet know if clams have a sustained sense of pain, or if they process pain in the way that we do. Even if clams can feel pain, they may not feel it in the same way that other animals do, and they may not find it as unpleasant as we do.
