Will snails hurt my aquarium?

While aquarium snails may not have any immediately detrimental effects on your freshwater tank, if their numbers increase dramatically they could begin to cause problems. Snails naturally feed on decaying vegetation and other forms of detritus so, to a certain extent, they can actually be beneficial for your tank.
When present in small numbers they pose no problems, but once they start to breed and increase in numbers they can be unsightly, damage plants and block aquarium filters. Controlling snails can be undertaken in the following ways. Manually remove the snails.
How many snails do I need to clean my fish tank?
The short answer is that you should keep as many as 1-2 mystery snails per 5 gallons. If you have a tank larger than 5 gallons, just divide the aquarium capacity in gallons number by 5 (example: 20 gallon tank ÷ 5 = 4). Then, multiply that result by 2 to get the max number of mystery snails you can keep in your tank.
Generally, snails are okay to be left alone for a few days.
Give them food that lasts, for example potato, sweet potato, planted herbs etc. BUT if you are looking for an animal that will take care of itself while you are away several days a week, a snail is not for you.
How long do aquarium snails live?
In general, depending on the species, aquarium snails can live from 1 to 5 years on average. While large land snails can be expected to live for 10 years or even more. Smaller snail species usually have a shorter lifespan than larger ones.

Check to make sure the knot on the plastic bag the snails came in is securely tied, so water cannot get in or out.
Float the bag with the snails in your tank.
After 30 minutes untie the bag and remove about one-quarter of the water using a plastic scoop or cup.

How do I introduce a new snail to my tank?
Once the water temperatures match and they’ve spent enough time floating, pick the snails out of the bag and plop them into their new tank. You don’t want to pour in the water from the bag as it could contain unwanted hitchhikers or cause infections.

There are many different types of freshwater snails, and each may require a different level of filtration. Some snails, such as those that live in rivers and streams, may not need a filter at all, while others, such as those that live in ponds and lakes, may need a more sophisticated filtration system.
Will snail leave the tank?
Aquarium snails can not survive outside of the water for long because their body dries out. If a water snail is placed on land, it would survive just a couple of hours. Some snails go out of the water to eat or lay eggs, but quickly return afterwards.
Do snails need a bubbler?
Yes, they do need oxygen as any other living creature. However, they can breathe in different ways. Basically, it depends on their respiratory system for oxygen exchange. For example, freshwater snails with an operculum are descended from marine ancestors and extract oxygen from the water with a single gill.

Almost all freshwater snails are beneficial scavengers that eat algae, dead plants, dead fish, extra fish food and other waste. This cleaning ability makes them an outstanding addition to your freshwater tank.

Do snails like sand or gravel?

Use a lettuce leaf as bait and the snails will flock to it. Place the lettuce in a small glass jar, fill it with aquarium water, and sink it to the bottom of the tank overnight. The jar will fill with snails; remove them in the morning. Repeat nightly until most of the snails are gone.
Are snails high maintenance?
Snails make friendly, relatively low maintenance pets. They require a moist environment and a diet filled with minerals and healthy vegetables. Snails enjoy each other’s company, so consider getting more than one. If you give snails a comfortable home and care for them properly they can live for many years.
