Why can fish change gender?

A sex change phenomenon in fish suggests there is something in the water. A new study published in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety finds that male fish are turning into females – a phenomenon known as intersex – due to chemical pollution, specifically estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals or EEDCs.
Clownfish, wrasses, moray eels, gobies and other fish species are known to change sex, including reproductive functions. A school of clownfish is always built into a hierarchy with a female fish at the top.
Can all fish change gender?
… and if that wasn’t complicated enough: almost all fish have the capacity to switch sex at the embryonic stage if subjected to one or more of a number of environmental factors, including the acidity of the water, parasites, chemical pollutants, and temperature.
Can goldfish change gender?
Although some fish can change sex, goldfish are not among those. Sex is fixed prior to birth. You are absolutely correct: at breeding time mature male goldfish will develop breeding tubercles that appear as white bumps on the gill covers (opercula) and the rays of their pectoral fins.
Sex in the reptile world is full of surprises — like lizards that change sex in response to the climate. That’s right: In warm environments, a type of lizard known as the Australian bearded dragon can switch from having its sex determined by genes to having it determined by temperature.
What amphibian can change gender?

Can jellyfish change gender?
Other species of jellyfish – sequential hermaphrodites – are either male and then female, or vice-versa, but not both simultaneously. These are natural transgender jellyfish. No special treatment is necessary.
Can seahorses change gender?

Are slugs asexual?
The majority of land slugs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning they possess both male and female reproductive organs that are functional at the same time. Some species regularly self-fertilise. Uniparental reproduction may also occur by apomixis, an asexual process.

Note that slugs do not regenerate from each half when cut through. That is worth remembering when you encounter the adults while doing other chores; just snip them, stomp them, smash them; anything to separate head from tail.
