What is a flare on a boat?

Flare is the angle at which a ship’s hull plate or planking departs from the vertical in an outward direction with increasing height. A flared hull typically has a deck area larger than its cross-sectional area at the waterline.
To meet carriage requirements, you must have at least three un-expired flares aboard. You may carry expired flares as back up, but they will not count towards the legal requirement.
What do different colored flares mean?
Color is one of the main distinctions in types of flares. White flares are for signaling in non-emergency circumstances — say, for finishing a race — and red flares are supposed to indicate an emergency. Red flares owe their distinctive color to the presence of strontium nitrate.
Are road flares OK for boats?
Having a road flare on a boat is a danger as it could cause serious burns to anyone trying to hold this type of flare, and if dropped could result in the boat going up in flames. When purchasing marine flares it is best to purchase flares from a local marina so you are assured you are getting up to date marine flares.
Often a Good Samaritan will come to assist when a flare is fired. Other boaters may have seen the flare and called the Coast Guard, so it is important you let the Coast Guard know via VHF radio or phone that you fired a flare. This is so the Coast Guard can call off any rescue forces that could be searching for you.
What does an orange flare mean?
Orange smoke distress flares:
Use as a line of sight distress signal for daytime use only. Handheld and Floating canister versions, which last approx 3 minutes.
What kind of flares do you need on a boat?
For boats 16′ in length or greater: One orange distress flag and one electric distress light – or – three hand-held or floating orange smoke signals and one electric distress light – or – three combination day/night red flares; hand-held, meteor or parachute type.
Do I need a flare gun on my boat?
Visual signaling devices
Boats under 16 feet must have flares or nighttime signals. Boats over 16 feet must carry visual signals for both day and night use. Examples of pyrotechnic devices or flares that would qualify are orange or white smoke and aerial light flares.
How long does a road flare burn?
Long life: Traditional road flares burn out in 15 minutes. The Flameless Flare LED safety flare will run for 250 hours continuously. The LED bulb never needs replacing. Simply replace the AAA batteries.
As long as there is a fuel and an oxidizer, enough heat to ignite them, and they produce enough heat to keep a flame going, it is possible to have a flame underwater.
How long does a flare last in water?
They are very visible from an aircraft and will usually burn for up to 60 seconds.
What temperature do flares burn at?
Road flares are widely available for purchase, and are often included in a typical roadside safety kit. This widespread availability, high burn temperature (1450 °C, 2650 °F) and high heat release rate lends itself as a ready ignition source for incendiary fires.
How long do boat flares last?
Most flares have a use-by date of 3 years and they must be replaced before the expiry date. Flares contain explosive matter which makes safe and legal disposal difficult. Flare collection is no longer available at service centres or maritime sites.
Is it illegal to set off a flare?
You don’t have to let off a flare inside a stadium for it to be a criminal offence. Possession of a smoke bomb or flare is itself a crime if you even attempt to enter a stadium – and that can include possession en route to the match.
Can you light a flare with a lighter?

Flares expire after 42 months and must be replaced to meet the USCG’s carriage requirements. Simply throwing expired flares in the trash would be an environmental and health hazard as they contain highly toxic chemicals such as perchlorate.
Can you soak flares in water?
Never dispose of flares by soaking them in water overnight and placing them in the trash. Their shells are waterproof, so the dangerous chemicals will still be active.
Handheld flares must burn for at least one minute at an average luminosity of 15,000 candelas, while aerial flares must burn for at least 40 seconds with a 30,000-candela average luminosity.
