What fish will a betta kill?

Every fish is different. Bettas, most of the time, are calm, passive fish, but their title ‘Siamese Fighting Fish’ isn’t around for nothing. Time and time again, bettas will attack and kill fish that even slightly resemble another betta, such as anything colourful, bright or with large fins.
The best way to stop your fish from fighting is to only have one male fish per tank. If keeping bettas in individual tanks, provide a visual barrier between the two tanks so the fish cannot see each other at any time. Simple aquarium backgrounds or a piece of cardboard are effective visual barriers.
Will bettas kill guppies?
In most cases, guppies and bettas won’t kill each other. However, it’s important to note that bettas are known to be aggressive, and guppies are known for being nippy. So there’s always a chance that one fish could hurt or kill the other.
Do They Get Lonely? Betta fish are naturally territorial and should not be housed with any other betta fish because they will fight and injure each other, often resulting in death. They are unlikely to get lonely in their tank; however, if they are in a small tank, they may get bored.
How many betta fish can you have in one tank?
Generally, a good number to keep together is 4-6 female betta fish. They enjoy having their own personal space, meaning that they should have enough foliage to hide in when they want to be alone. Often, plants or aquarium decorations can serve as good hiding places for betta fish.
Can betta fish live with goldfish?
Short answer, no! There are many reasons why these two fish cannot be tank mates. First of all, a betta fish is a tropical fish, originating in the waters of Thailand, the betta needs waters of 78 – 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Goldfish, however, prefer cooler waters of around 74 degrees Fahrenheit.
How big do bettas get?
Betta fish grow to be no longer than 3 inches, typically. Their usual lifespan is 2-5 years. They have brilliantly colored fins, and various tail types. Common colors include red, blue, black, white and orange.

Bettas like light so that they know when to wake up and prefer a darker environment to sleep in. You may have an aquarium light on your tank and if so, it is probably best for you to turn this on when you wake up in the morning and turn it off just before bedtime.
How often do you feed a betta?
It is recommended to feed your betta fish two to four pellets, once or twice per day. Pellets expand when placed in water and are very filling for your betta fish. Freeze-dried or fresh food can be substituted for their pellet feeding 1 to 2 days per week.
Can I touch my betta fish?
Betta fish should rarely, if ever, be petted. It’s not good to pet them, as it may remove their natural slime coating, making them prone to certain diseases. Also, never touch them with dirty hands, as bacteria can easily be transmitted through direct contact.
How often do you have to clean a betta fish tank?
You need to clean a 5-gallon tank weekly, while a larger 15- or 20-gallon tank only needs cleaning once or twice a month.
What lighting is best for betta fish?
The ideal lighting schedule for Bettas is 8-12 hours of varying degrees of light followed by 12 hours of darkness. This schedule mimics their natural environment and helps them maintain a healthy sleep-wake cycle. During the day, Bettas need a few hours of bright light to help them stay active and find food.
UV light is good for betta fish as it can help them regulate their day. And on top of this, UV light can help plant growth in your tank as well!
Do lights stress out betta fish?
Betta fish typically need 8 to 12 hours of light, and 12 to 16 of darkness, so make turning off your tank light a pre-bedtime habit. If your betta fish has too much light, it can become overly stimulated and stressed.
What color of light do betta like?
Bettas prefer subdued lighting, so avoid bright colors or lights that shine directly into the tank. Instead, opt for a softer color light that will provide gentle illumination without being too harsh. Many betta owners find that white or blue LED lights work well for their needs.

Frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms make for especially welcome and tasty betta food treats. You can feed your betta fish live food as well, as a way to stimulate them. You can also feed your betta fish flakes for food. Fish flakes are an inexpensive and easy to store food option.
