Boat fenders, often referred to as “boat bumpers” by new or novice boaters, provide a cushion between your boat and a dock, jetty or another boat. They’re used by all types of boats from motor yachts and sailboats to small runabouts to prevent damage to paint, varnish, gunwales and hulls overall.
The general rule of thumb is that a cylindrical fender should have 1″ of diameter (2″ for round fenders) for every 4′ to 5′ of boat length.
Do I need fenders for both sides of boat?
There should be one fender for every 10 feet of waterline and a minimum of three fenders for each side of the boat. If your boat is heavier than normal for its length, or if the mooring conditions are harsh use more fenders than recommended. Cylindrical fenders are the most common type.
There is another old rule of thumb for this too – 1 fender per 10 feet of Low Waterline Length (LWL) with a minimum of 3 for boats of 20 feet or less.
