Clownfish have a symbiotic relationship with anemones. Anemones have stinging cells, as do most cnidarians (jellyfish, anemones, coral) that dissuades predators. The clownfish makes use of this protective devise by hiding within it.
Clownfish are commonly found in coral reefs and are prominent in the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea and the western Pacific, living inside of anemones in small colonies.

Can you keep clownfish without coral?
