Uneaten food remains in the aquarium after 5 minutes, but the fish show no interest in it.
Aquarium water is cloudy or hazy and has a foul odor to it.
Filter media becomes clogged in a matter of days after cleaning.
Excessive algae growth.
Ammonia or nitrite levels are elevated.
How do I know if my fish has internal parasites? Internal parasites will cause loss of appetite, listlessness and erratic swimming. Note redness, irritation and/or threadlike worms coming from the fish’s tail area. If accompanied by bloating, these symptoms indicate a nematode infestation, also known as roundworm.
What causes high alkaline in fish tank? If your tapwater has a low or neutral pH but your tank has a high pH, then something in the tank is raising the pH. This is most commonly from an alkaline substrate that contains shells or limestone, or from rocks which contain lime, like Limestone, Tufa rock, or Ocean Rock.
How do you get rid of fish flukes? As flukes are often the root of ulcers and other secondary infections, treat for flukes before treating with antibacterial or antifungal medications. A number of treatments are available for flukes, those containing Praziquantel are the most effective.

Adding 1 tablespoon of noniodized rock salt to each gallon of water is helpful in effecting a cure. In fact, salt might be all that is needed in early cases. Salt can also be used in combination with malachite green.

Treatment for cotton wool disease in freshwater fish includes salt baths using Freshwater Aquarium Salt or commercially available antifungal treatments for aquarium use. In some instances, the entire tank is treated, but if individual infections are present, treating the fish in a separate hospital tank is preferable.
How do you treat bloat in fish? Supplement the use of antibiotics with the addition of Epsom salt at a dose of 1 teaspoon per 5 to 10 gallons and by raising the temperature to 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Malawi bloat is usually treated with metronidazole. If the fish is still feeding, metronidazole-dosed foods can be used.
