Is shad a good fish to eat?

“Shad is a great fish to eat, it’s very healthy for you, and you’re supporting a local fishery that’s sustainable.” Shad, a large member of the herring family, are famously bony fish. Cooks get around that by baking the fish to soften the bones. But for most people, the real prize is the shad roe.
shad, any of several saltwater food fishes of the herring family (Clupeidae) that swim up rivers to spawn. Shad of the genus Alosa are rather deep bodied and have a notch in the upper jaw into which the tip of the lower fits. Young shad have small teeth, but the adults are toothless.

Like bluefish, the state’s “other” fish, shad is oily with a distinctive taste, but one of the most flavorful white fish you can eat. Unfortunately, even the heartiest of piscivores have trouble due to the frustrating bones—about 1,300 in a typical shad.

What is the best way to cook shad fish?
Today’s shad fillets are best cooked by panfrying or baking until the flesh is opaque — about 10 minutes for a 1-inch thick piece of fish. Along the Connecticut River, fiddleheads poke up on the banks just as the shad are arriving, and they are its traditional local partner. Greens also partner shad in Europe.
Is shad good for bass fishing?
A flurry of shad breaking the surface means that there are larger fish feeding on them from below. This tight schooling activity means that shad can provide a great deal of food for the bass even though each individual shad may only be 3 to 4 inches long.
When stocked together, threadfin shad will be especially beneficial to the growth of smaller bass. We recommend stocking gizzard shad in trophy bass ponds when they have a large number of bass over 16 inches in length in the population.
What is the legal size for shad?
There are additional restrictions to protect overfished species such as minimum size (30 m), daily bag limit (4 pp/pd) and a closed season (1 Oct – 30 Nov) for recreational fishers.
Is shad freshwater or saltwater?
Shad are anadromous, they hatch in freshwater, migrate to sea, then return to freshwater to spawn.
Where is the best place to catch shad?
Shad are easier to catch on warm days, locations would be the backs of coves and creeks where the water has been warmed by the sun all day. Look for stained water since shad will rarely be in clear shallow water and even if they are there they are very hard to get a net on.
Are shad hard to catch?
You can easily catch shad from a boat or from the shore in the cold water period, you just have to do the work and get in the right location and make sure you’re right on top of them. When you do this you’ll have more bait than you need.
What time of year is best for shad?
The best time to fish for shad is when they return to spawn from May until mid-July. It’s easier to catch the shad swimming upstream by facing a strong current. These fish will bite just about any small lure or fly. Small, bright colored jigs with or without bucktail or plastic grub tails are preferred by many anglers.
They are most frequently caught between March and May. It is not uncommon for anglers to catch over 100 fish in a day of fishing. Some individuals swear by Mother Nature and wait until the shad bush starts blooming to go fish. Others start right when the cormorants appear at the Fall Line in Fredericksburg.
