Mammal or fish? Many mistakenly consider mantas to be mammals. In reality, they are fish, belonging to the same class (Elasmobranchii) as sharks, and other species of ray.
Manta rays are chondrichthyans, or cartilaginous fish, belonging to a group of fish that have skeletons made of cartilage. This key trait sets up a host of differences between sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras (chondrichthyans) and bony fish (teleosts).
