How often should you feed fish?
by
You should feed your fish two to three times daily. A few flakes per fish is sufficient. The fish should eat all the food in two minutes or less. Overfeeding can cloud your water and harm your fish.
As for how much food to feed, a good rule of thumb is to feed no more than the fish will consume completely in five to ten minutes. 3 When in doubt, underfeed! You can always give them another small feeding if necessary. However, if you overfeed, the uneaten food will produce wastes that can be harmful to the fish.
How long can fish go without being fed?
Healthy adult fish can go for a week or two without feeding. However, young fish don’t have the fat stores of adult fish and they cannot go without eating very long. That doesn’t mean you should routinely skip feedings, but your fish can safely be left without food over a long holiday weekend.
We recommend feeding fish two or three times a day rather than just once a day. Fish will learn the routine, if you usually feed them around 7am, 12pm and 6pm every day, you’ll find them waiting for you at those times!

How do I know if my fish is hungry?
How To Tell If Your Fish Is Hungry
Your fish is digging around the substrate (searching for food).
Waiting and the top of the aquarium (for feeding time).
Behavior changes (aggression).
Noticeable weight/size changes.
Slow or sluggish behavior.
Can you overfeed fish?
However, overfeeding fish can be a serious problem that can cause fish becoming lethargic and sick, and even lead to death. Overfeeding your fish can not only affect the health of your fish but can also have a negative impact on the overall health of your aquarium.
Should I feed fish everyday?
For the most part, feeding your fish once or twice a day is sufficient. Some hobbyists even fast their fish one or two days a week to allow them to clear their digestive systems. Larger, more sedentary fish can go longer between meals than smaller, more active fish.
What does fish do at night?
While fish do not sleep in the same way that land mammals sleep, most fish do rest. Research shows that fish may reduce their activity and metabolism while remaining alert to danger. Some fish float in place, some wedge themselves into a secure spot in the mud or coral, and some even locate a suitable nest.
Do fish need air bubbles?
While air pumps are not always necessary, there are very few circumstances where they would not be beneficial to a tank. Some species of fish, such as bettas, prefer still water, and the presence of an air pump can agitate them. In most cases, however, air pumps benefit fish by allowing them more oxygen to breathe.
Most healthy aquarium fish can go three days to a week without eating. However, it usually isn’t recommended to go more a day or two without feeding unless completely necessary.
Should I leave my fish tank light on while on vacation?
The fish also need to get “sleep” time and darkness is important (they don’t have eyelids and can’t close their eyes to sleep) – constant bright light 24 hours a day is stressful for the fish. Feeding the fish is always the biggest concern while being away on vacation.
What do fish do all day in a tank?
Diurnal Fish Behavior
That might involve scavenging around the tank bottom for scraps of food, eating whatever flakes or pellets you scatter on the water surface, or grazing on the colonies of algae that grow on tank surfaces. Depending on the species, foraging for food can take up most of the fish’s day.
How long will fish live without a filter?
A fish live without a filter for a maximum of seven days and a minimum of three days. A filter helps clean the water over and over again, so the toxins in it don’t settle down. But that doesn’t make the filter a necessity for fish survival.

Change 10 to 15 percent of the water each week. If your tank is heavily stocked, bump that up to 20 percent each week. A lightly stocked tank can get by for two weeks, but that should be the maximum length of time between water changes as you do not want to place any stress on your fish.
Do fish like air stones?
The answer is an absolute yes, it does not matter whether you have a filter in your aquarium or not, attaching an air stone makes the water circulation much better. Adding an air stone will keep the water cleaner, provide the fish with more oxygen, and it has a lot of health benefits for the aquatic life.
How do I know if my tank has enough oxygen?
Aside from actually testing the water for dissolved oxygen, the only indication of trouble will be the behavior of your fish.
Fish will initially react to lower oxygen levels by moving around less. They will swim less vigorously and even eat less often.
Eventually, fish will begin gasping at the surface of the water.
Does a waterfall oxygenate a fish tank?
While effective, waterfalls only circulate/aerate the surface of the pond leaving the bottom virtually untouched. This can cause an anaerobic environment (low oxygen) to develop on the bottom of the pond which is unsafe for fish and causes increased organic build-up.
Can you put too much air bubbles in fish tank?
Yes, too many micro bubbles in fish tanks can kill aquarium plants. They cause the death of plants by limiting gaseous exchange between the tank water surface and atmosphere. Carbon dioxide leaves and oxygen enters the tank water from the air in normal conditions.
