An electric motor spins the impeller to create kinetic energy. An intake port sucks water in, and the impeller’s kinetic energy transfers to the water. This energy forces the water into the tank, where it circulates into the tank’s filter and eventually makes its way back into the pump.
Generally speaking, you should leave the air pump on all the time to help your fish get good water circulation and plenty of oxygen to breathe.
Where should a water pump be placed in a fish tank?
Position the powerhead so it pumps water from the back of the tank and hits the front glass. This will complement the water flow pattern of the filter. This technique flushes every corner of the tank with water and helps keep the aquarium clean.

Should a water pump be before or after filter?
Booster pressure pump should be installed between the first and second filter stage (filter housing) of the system. Do NOT install the pump before the filter housing due to the contamination of raw (inlet) water. That could damage the pump.
Can fish sleep with the water pump on?
Keep your fish happy by keeping the pump on. Yes, fish sleep intermittently during day and during night. Since it has no eyelids, the eyes remain open even while sleeping. There is no need to put off the airpump at night.

Generally, the water pump is located on the front of the engine. A drive pulley is mounted on the pump hub, and the fan is attached to the pulley. The fan clutch, if used, mounts to the pulley with bolts through the flange.
