Do all fish turn female?
About two per cent of fish species display some kind of hermaphroditism: that’s 500 different species worldwide. Some like the kobudai change routinely from female to male. Others, like the clownfish, do the opposite, from male to female.
What animal can change gender?
Clownfish, wrasses, moray eels, gobies and other fish species are known to change sex, including reproductive functions. A school of clownfish is always built into a hierarchy with a female fish at the top.
Do fish have different genders?
You can determine the sex of your fish by inspecting its gonads (reproductive organs), which are located towards the top of the gut cavity. Mature female fish will have orange ovaries and male fish will have white testes (see photos above).
