Do any fish have a sense of smell? Olfaction (or smell) is a major sense for fishes, used for many different functions including location of a food source, predator avoidance, finding their ‘home’ area or a spawning ground, recognition of kin group members and identification of fish of the same species.

Do fish drink water when they eat?

Do fish get thirsty for water? As well as getting water through osmosis, saltwater fish need to purposefully drink water in order to get enough into their systems. Where their freshwater counterparts direct all of the water that comes into their mouths out through their gills, saltwater fish direct some into their digestive tract.

Do fish lay eggs or get pregnant? Fish reproduce by bearing live young or by laying eggs. Livebearers give birth to fully formed and functional young called fry. The eggs are fertilized and hatch within the female.

Which animals have periods? Most of the menstruating species, including humans, are primates [2]. Besides in primates, menstruation has been observed only in the spiny mouse [3], 3–5 species of bats [4–6], and the elephant shrews [7] (Figure 1).

How can you tell if a fish has cancer? Most tumors are seen as bumps or lumps under the fish’s skin. But the location and signs of the tumor can be different for each fish, and depend greatly on the type of tumor. Unfortunately, internal tumors or cancers display symptoms once it has become to late to save the fish.

How do you know if your fish are bored? Some of the ways you can tell if your betta is bored are if you notice him tail biting, acting lethargic, and not dashing to get his food. However, there are a lot of different signs so it’s important to know your betta and notice any changes in his behavior.
