Can fish have sweets? Yes, you can feed your pet fish your love just like your cat or dog. There are many fish treats available on the market for fish and not all are created equal. How can you tell if fish is pregnant? As your female fish becomes pregnant, she will grow a bulge at the back of her abdomen. This typically appears over the course of 20-40 days. Does your fish have a red or black spot? Sometimes, when a female fish is pregnant, she will develop a “gravid spot” on the abdomen.

What fish can you freeze and bring back to life? Every winter, the northern European crucian carp gets frozen into the ice, and receives no oxygen. Every spring, when the ice melts, a seeming miracle occurs: the fish emerges from the ice and resumes normal life.

Can fish die when water is cold? Just as salmon are accustomed to cold water temperatures, several Florida fish like tilapia and peacock bass are acclimated to warm water temperatures. So, if we have a cold snap that lowers water temperatures below 55°F, entire populations of these non-native tropical fish will die-off.

Luckily, trout can quickly “burp” the air, mostly oxygen, out from their swim bladder to avoid this type of trauma.

How long fish breathe underwater? Like us, fish need oxygen to survive. But to breathe, most pull oxygen-containing water into their mouths and pump it through their gill chambers before expelling it out of their gill slits. Now, for the first time, scientists have seen fish “holding” that breath, some for up to 4 minutes at a time.
