Do fish get thirsty in water?

You might be interested to know that the opposite happens in freshwater fish. Water flows into their body through osmosis, instead of out. This means they don’t generally need to drink – but they do have to pee a lot.
Fish do consume water and need it to survive just as humans do. But fish don’t necessarily drink it as a human drinks a glass of water. Fish consume water through a process known as osmosis.
How much do fish drink water?
Freshwater fish never drink water because their bodies are saltier than the surrounding water. Osmosis draws water into the fish’s body through its skin and gills, unlike saltwater fish, where the water is drawn out of the body. If freshwater fish did drink water they would blow up like balloons.
Fish-keepers sometimes see their pets ‘glass surfing’ – swimming repeatedly up and down the glass of the tank. This could be the aquatic equivalent of the pacing of a captive tiger that’s bored from a lack of stimulation. But the fish could also be stressed from an overcrowded or unfamiliar tank.
Can fishes cry?
No, fishes can’t cry and can’t produce tears.
It is often thought that fish may lack the limbic system, but in reality, fishes do have a limbic system, but they lack the biological machinery to produce tears.

So, how do fish expel their feces? Well most of them will expel their feces through an anal vent (also called a cloaca), which is simply an opening for all wastes to leave the body. This includes not only feces but also urine, reproduction, and sometimes eggs or sperm if needed.

Can I put tap water in my fish tank?

Most municipalities treat drinking water with either chlorine or chloramine for disinfection purposes. Chlorine is extremely toxic to fish and needs to be completely removed before the water comes in contact with fish. Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia, both of which are detrimental to fish.
Can I add water to my fish tank with the fish in it?

Even while the fish is in the tank, you can safely add more water to it. “How is that possible?” You may ask. As long as you don’t highly agitate your fish, they will not get too stressed about you adding more water.
What is the best type of water to use in a fish tank?

If you want to be sure your aquarium water is free from mineral and chemical contaminants, deionized water is a great choice. Deionization is ineffective against bacteria, but it does filter some contaminants that even reverse osmosis systems cannot catch.
