Mooring whips have been around for many decades, and they’re extremely effective. Basically, mooring whips are like big fishing poles mounted to the dock.

The recommended location for mooring whips is on the side of the dock which is most protected from winds. This is preferrable to cause the boat to stay clear of the dock rather than be forced towards it. The general rule is that the span between the whips should be approximately 2/3 of the boats’ overall length.
Standard 16-foot poles are ideal for 30-foot boats with a maximum weight of 20,000 lbs. and standard 18-foot mooring whips are reserved for vessels up to 45-feet and 30,000 lbs. 16-foot heavy-duty poles are rated for vessels to 49-feet and 39,000 lbs.

Turn the engine all the way to port or all the way to starboard, as is appropriate to kick the boat around so the stern faces the slip, and apply forward power to initiate a turn. Then shift into neutral, spin the wheel the opposite way, and apply power in reverse to both slow headway and continue turning the boat.
Lazy lines are used in busy harbours and marinaswhere multiple anchors would become fouled. Instead of the anchorholding the bow away, the bow is connected to a heavy bow line, which ispre-attached to a concrete block on the seabed.

How do you pick up a lazy line?
Windward stern line on first, hold the boat against that with the engine, then walk the lazy line out to the bow and make fast. If the wind isn’t too bad, then the second stern line can go on whilst the lazy line is being sorted out, otherwise it waits until the lazy line is secure.
How do I leave a Med mooring?
When it is time to depart, drop three stern lines, leaving the windward line in place. This windward line should be rigged to slip. Either drop the bow mooring line in the water and wait for it to sink before dropping the last stern line and manoeuvre out. If the anchor is deployed, start bringing it in.
