Although not technically a fish, the Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an extraordinarily unique amphibian. Nicknamed the Mexican Walking Fish, the Axolotl was first discovered in Lake Xochimilco in Mexico in the 19th century by French explorers. These alien-like salamanders have a distinctive appearance.

Yes, you can touch an axolotl without causing immediate harm. That being said, you want to be incredibly delicate if you touch them, as their thin skinned-bodies and exposed gills are incredibly sensitive. Generally speaking, you want to go slow when trying to touch an axolotl.
Why shouldn’t you touch your axolotl?
While axolotls are relatively hardy to slight fluctuations in their environment, they also have delicate, soft bodies with permeable skin. In fact, most of their body is made of cartilage rather than bone. That means they should not be handled unless absolutely necessary.
Can axolotls bite your finger off?
No from what I read they don’t, if you do get bit don’t try to pull your finger out of the mouth, just let it let go on its own because you don’t want to damage the axolotl.

A couple of ice cubes in the water are fine but don’t put a whole frozen water bottle in the tank. If you are using the bottle method, keep the bottle mainly out of the water in a corner of the tank. Seven: When doing the ice method, be sure to always have ice bottles or cubes ready.
Keep a lid on the aquarium at all times as axolotls can jump out of the water surprisingly well! An external canister style filter typically works best to keep water clean, however, be sure it has an attachment to spread the water outflow, such as a spray bar. Axolotls do not tolerate strong water flow like most fish.
Will an axolotl follow you?
In order to get them to follow you, you will need to be holding a tropical fish (either in your off-hand or main hand). Axolotls don’t offer too much in raw power on their own, but you can unleash multiple buckets of axolotl at once, so your enemies have a lot to cope with.
