Can piranhas be in saltwater?

Piranha (Pygocentrus oceanus). Piranhas are an omnivorous species usually found in South American rivers but through a recent marine census a salt water species was found inhabiting tropical waters off the coast of Australia.
Today, piranhas inhabit the freshwaters of South America from the Orinoco River Basin in Venezuela up to the Paraná River in Argentina. Though estimates vary, around 30 species inhabit the lakes and rivers of South America today.
Will piranhas actually bite you?
While piranhas have a reputation for being ferocious man-eaters, they rarely attack and hardly ever kill humans. Red-bellied piranhas are the most aggressive and have been known to bite humans in the dry season, when food may be scarce, but these attacks are usually not fatal.

The truth is Piranha are rather more scared of you than you think. They are preyed upon by river dolphins and caiman so stay away from large animals in the water, including humans. They are scavengers by nature and ‘frenzy’ only with dead meat in the water.
