Can fishes live without air?

An aquarium fish can stay up to two days without oxygen (in still water) but they still need some more amount of oxygen to breathe and do their essential daily work.
Goldfish and their wild crucian carp relatives can survive for five months without breathing oxygen – and now we know how. The fish have evolved a set of enzymes that, when oxygen levels drop, ultimately helps convert carbohydrates into alcohol that can then be released through the gills.
Does every fish need air?
Fish can live long, healthy lives in tanks without an air pump, and fish will show signs if they are not getting enough oxygen. Some symptoms of oxygen deprivation in fish can be indicative of other causes.

How do I know if my fish are getting enough oxygen?
If you noticed your fishes are moving around less i.e. they are swimming less or swimming slowly than usual then it may be because your aquarium has a low oxygen level. If you noticed all the fishes in your aquarium are eating less food then in this could be a sign that your aquarium has a low oxygen level.
How do I know if my fish tank has too much oxygen?
The signs of too much oxygen in a fish tank are bubbles escaping the surface and increased dissolved oxygen levels. Fish will also show abnormal swimming behavior, open mouth breathing, excessive appetite, or lethargy. If left unchecked for too long, it can be fatal to the fishes’ health.
Why is my fish staying in one spot?

You’re better off leaving it on all the time. Over time algae will build up and block the holes on the airstone, making your pump need to work harder which will eventually wear it out. While this will happen even if it is on constantly, the build up will be slower.
