How does Ich get into a tank?
by
Ich (Ichthyopthirius multifiliis), also known as White Spot Disease, is actually a parasite which can be transmitted to your tank from equipment, plants, or stock that is carrying the parasite, even without showing symptoms. Some in the fish keeping community even believe ich is present in any tank that holds fish.
Other methods, such as adding salt, increasing water temperature, and changing the water are also used by fish hobbyists to treat ich infection in an aquarium. Parasitic trophonts usually stay in fish for five to seven days at a water temperature of 22º to 25ºC (72º to 77ºF).
Can fish recover from Ich by themselves?
Saltwater fish have a number of natural defenses against ich, and if the fish are healthy enough and the outbreak mild enough, sometimes the fish may cure themselves, just as they would in nature. We can assist them to some degree by maintaining good water quality and providing a nourishing diet.
Ich is technically forever. It will die off. But it’s usually always in that sand bed at some point or another. If 11 fish died in two days it defintely wasn’t Ich unless they looked like you poured salt on them.

What kills ich fast?
Increase Temperature:
Temperature increases help speed up the life cycle of ich so you can kill them faster. The max, if you can, would be 89F (31C), but if you can get your temp up to at least 86F (30C), that should be high enough.
Where does ich come from?
Stress. Stress is the main factor in ich eruptions. If your fish get stressed, either by their environment, transportation, their tank mates or because they can’t remember if they left the stove on, their immune system get weakened and they will become susceptible to an ich infection.
How fast can you get rid of ich?
Raise the fish aquarium water temperature to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the aquarium run for about 10 days. If there are ich parasites still in the aquarium, they will be unable to find a host and will die. Similarly, any eggs will hatch and the parasites will die off.
How long does it take for ich to leave a tank?
Once the parasite is not able to find a host in your display tank, it will presumably die off completely after it runs through its lifecycle (roughly 4 weeks).
WHITE SPOT CURE kills the Ich parasite, usually within 24 hours and is safe for use in freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Corals and invertebrates may be sensitive to this medication.
What temp kills ich?
It has been observed that temperature changes of 15o F or more above or below the temperature at which an Ich case is detected will end the disease episode regardless of the number of treatments made.
Is ICH always in your tank?
It’s important to note that ich is always present, and there is nothing you can do to get rid of it. Fish are naturally immune to ich, and only succumb to it when their immune systems or protective slime-coating have been compromised, or when they’re stressed.
Can you feed fish while treating for ICH?
Generally, it is fine to feed fish whilst they are undergoing a course of treatment, as long as they are still eating.
What triggers ich?
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is caused by bleeding within the brain tissue itself — a life-threatening type of stroke. A stroke occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen and blood supply. ICH is most commonly caused by hypertension, arteriovenous malformations, or head trauma.
Should I do a water change if my fish have ich?
Once treatment is complete do a 1/3 water change, add new carbon to your filter, lower the temperature back to normal and feed your fish a good quality fish food which will help your fish recover from the parasite by growing new healthy skin and scales.
The carbon in the filter removes contaminants and chemicals from the water. Therefore, if it is left it in whilst treating the tank for something, it will remove the treatment and whatever you were trying to treat will continue to be a problem.
How do I clean my tank after ICH outbreak?
Treat tank components individually – You can use a bleach solution to clean every tank component like live plants, rocks, driftwood, tank equipment, and everything that goes into the water. A bleach solution of 1:10 concentration should eliminate all tomonts and other forms of Ich everywhere in the tank within 3 hours.
Can Ich live in tap water?
Therefore, if ich dies in freshwater, it can’t possibly survive in tap water. It especially can’t survive long enough to make it through all the sanitation steps found in wastewater treatment plants, then hang out long enough in freshwater to reach your house to infect your fish.
How do I clean my fish tank with ich?
Can humans get ich?
Ich is a well-known problem for aqua-culturists, aquarium owners, pond owners, hobbyists and retailers of freshwater fish. People and birds can also carry the parasite, unknowingly, from pond to pond.
