If you want to make a paper boat, fold a piece of paper in half from top to bottom. Then, fold it again from side to side and unfold so you have a crease in the center. Fold the top right corner down towards the center. Next, flip the paper over and fold the other corner down on the other side.
Fill the tray up with water (not too full, it is hard to move it without spilling it if full… in fact, do this near a sink!)
Cut an index card into the shape seen below.
Place the paper “boat” in the water at one end.
Put a small drop of liquid soap at the small triangle cut of the boat.
Watch the action!

Paper boats are able to float because there is greater force involved with the water pushing up against the boat than the boat pushing down. Paper boats float based on the principle of buoyancy, which is the same principle that explains why anything floats.
Will a paper boat sink in water?
Paper boat is less dense than water. When it is placed on water, it starts floating. Thus, the concept which determine the floating or sinking of objects is density.
How do you waterproof a paper boat?
A coat of melted beeswax or soy wax offers an organic way to waterproof origami, and it’s particularly ideal for making origami boats. Just fold your boat as desired, then use an old paintbrush to apply a coat of melted wax to all the exposed areas.

Why does NASA use origami?
In space engineering, origami is applied as a method of organizing luggage for space travel, increasing flexibility of spatial structures, and improving the accuracy of robotic motion. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has the lead in origami space engineering.
