While aquarium snails may not have any immediately detrimental effects on your freshwater tank, if their numbers increase dramatically they could begin to cause problems. Snails naturally feed on decaying vegetation and other forms of detritus so, to a certain extent, they can actually be beneficial for your tank.
When present in small numbers they pose no problems, but once they start to breed and increase in numbers they can be unsightly, damage plants and block aquarium filters. Controlling snails can be undertaken in the following ways. Manually remove the snails.

Beware that they can and do eat other meaty items – I’ve seen them feast on decorative shrimp (all snails will eat dead or dying animals, including fish). They will also eat algae, though they generally leave plants alone.

As for fish, regular calm community tank fish can be good choices as are bottom feeders and algae eaters such as Cory Cats and Otocinclus Catfish. Goldfish and tough roughens like aquarium crayfish, Striped Convicts, Jack Dempsey, Oscars and other cichlids should be avoided.
The question is: how many mystery snails per gallon should you keep? The short answer is that you should keep as many as 1-2 mystery snails per 5 gallons. If you have a tank larger than 5 gallons, just divide the aquarium capacity in gallons number by 5 (example: 20 gallon tank ÷ 5 = 4).
