What causes fish to get ick?
by
“Ich” or “white spot disease” is caused by the protozoan parasite, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, which means in Latin “Fish Louse with many children.” The saltwater form of ich or white spot disease is caused by Cryptocaryon irritans. Both parasites have a complex life cycle that makes them difficult to treat.
The easiest treatment method is to buy an Ich treatment from your local pet supply shop. Most are made with formaldehyde, malachite green, or copper sulfate, or a combination of these ingredients. My personal favorite treatment is Hikari Ich X.
Can humans get ick from fish?
Like all animals, fish may carry germs that make people sick. These germs can also contaminate the water in which fish live. Although fish and aquarium water can spread germs to people, illness due to keeping fish is rare.
The disease is caused by the ciliate protozoan Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, commonly called ich or ick. Fish infected with ich typically develop small, blister-like, raised lesions (white spots) on the skin and/or fins. If the infection is restricted to the gills, however, no white spots will be seen.

Can you save a fish with ick?
Aquarium fish will not be able to survive Ich without adequate treatment, because the parasites will keep reinfecting their fish host until they overwhelm and kill it. In order to successfully treat and cure Ich, you’ll need to target the parasite in the only vulnerable stage of its life cycle.

Can ick go away by itself?
No.It may fall off only to reproduce and it will eventually get all your fish. If they are healthy they can fight it off but it will always be in your tank waiting for a stressor to take advantage and kill them.
How long does ick stay in tank?
This is the stage at which many hobbyists are fooled into thinking they have defeated Ich. The parasite can live on your substrate for 3 to 72 days with no obvious signs of infection on your fish.
Stress is the main factor in ich eruptions. If your fish get stressed, either by their environment, transportation, their tank mates or because they can’t remember if they left the stove on, their immune system get weakened and they will become susceptible to an ich infection.
What temp kills Ich?
The infective juveniles (tomites) will be killed while the water temperature is at 90°. When the temperature is dropped, the adult organisms will fall off the fish and begin to reproduce.
How do you get rid of Ich fast?
Raise the fish aquarium water temperature to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.Let the aquarium run for about 10 days. If there are ich parasites still in the aquarium, they will be unable to find a host and will die. Similarly, any eggs will hatch and the parasites will die off.
What does ick look like on fish?
Simply put, ich is a parasite. It is easily diagnosed by the appearance of white spots that look like salt or sugar grains. Other signs of ich include loss of appetite, labored breathing, and flashing (when fish rub their bodies on the substrate or decorations).
How long is the Ich cycle?
The life cycle of Ich lasts 3–6 days at 25°C and increases in length as water temperature decreases (Noga, 2010; Dickerson, 2006).
How fatal is Ich?
In addition, infected fish may exhibit respiratory distress that can appear as ‘gasping’, act sluggish or hang on either the surface or bottom of your aquarium, and exhibit physical changes such as cloudy eyes or ragged fins. If not treated, Ich is frequently fatal to fish.
It can be difficult to spot a fish infected with ich – especially in the early stages of the infection. But if you look closely, you will see an infected fish will have numerous little white nodules on its body, that almost resemble tiny grains of salt.
Is Ich always in your tank?
Nope, ich is ALWAYS present regardless of qt. If you have a fish, you have ich.
